Intent - At KS3, Geography is about understanding the world we live in. It helps to provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. At Saxon Mount School children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it.
The geography curriculum at Saxon Mount enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferrable to other curriculum areas. When teaching geography, our intent is to inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and people within it; to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
At KS4, the pupils will be studying the Developing World, Urban Change in the UK, changing UK Economy and Urbanisation. This is to include case studies on Nigeria and Bristol.
The Geography curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability or learning need, to flourish. We teach the National Curriculum, ensuring that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. The local area is fully utilised to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom on school trips and fieldwork, further embedding the learning that has already taken place. It is hoped that the knowledge and skills will allow the students the opportunity to have access to and undertake GCSE Geography at the end of KS4

Rivers – Learning about the structure and hazards of rivers.
Russia – Learning includes the physical and human features of Russia.
Coasts – Learning about waves, wave processes and erosion landforms
Weather and Climate – the difference between them and the hazards
Brazil and Rio – Location, rainforest climate, favelas and tourism
China – Human and Physical features of China.
Energy and Climate Change – Introduction to DTM and development Indicators
Africa and Nigeria – Location climate and development.
This qualification allows pupils the opportunity to develop: communication and interpersonal skills through class discussions and personal opinion, map reading, location and environmental skills with field trips and outdoor activities. Geography also supports literacy and numeracy skills throughout the course.
